The United Nations Report on Climate Change has pointed to threats to global food security. Decreases in crop yields, demands of a growing population and increasing temperatures could result in a 3% to 84% rise in food prices by 2050. Extreme temperatures and crop pests could make traditional cool mountainsides less hospitable for coffee bean growth. Growing regions in Brazil suitable for coffee production could be reduced by two thirds with a temperature rise of 3 degrees Celsius. A rise in the world’s population to a predicted 9.7 billion in 2050, compared to an estimated 1.7 billion in 1900 will further increase pressure on resources.
